Quake 1/2 Symbol Tutorial:

Alright, in this tutorial i'll show you how to make a Quake1/2 symbol :P Its quite simple.

1. Open up photoshop, set your grid to 10px (edit > preferences > guides, grids, & slices) make a new transparent 400x400px picture.

2. Make a new layer (ctrl+shift+n) im too lazy to name them anything, so just make sure your working on layer 2. Get the Elliptical Marquee tool out, and set the style to fixed size. Set the width to 200 and height to 200. Select a circle towards the upper middle of the page (having snap on is a plus). Show Me!

3. Fill it black, and deselect it. Now go back to the marquee tool, and now set it to 180x180. Now line up the black circle and the marquee circle so that they meet at the top like this. Now hit delete and deselect. You should have this.

4. Now trim the top to get the gap between the Q, and make a new layer (layer 3).

5. Alright, now for the spike. Whip out the Polygonal Lasso Tool, and make a selection for the spike. It's kind of hard to explain how todo it, so just look at this pic for reference. Now fill this layer black and move it to the center of the arc if your making a Q1 symbol. For a Q2 symbol just copy the spike layer, position the spikes next to eachother, and make sure the middle is aligned with the arcs middle like so.

6. Add some background into layer 1 if you want, its not necessary though.

Thats it! Told you it was simple. If you want more detail just play around with the bevel and emboss tools, stroke, outer glow, ect. This was one of my end results (click for fullsize):
